Dry skin or xerosis, its medical term, is a common skin condition that starts as an insignificant discomfort but usually turns into a chronic ailment, impossible to resolve completely. Indeed, dry skin is considered by many as a skin type instead of an alteration. In the view of our medical advisor, Dr. Victor García

Xerosis can be easily controlled by taking some precautions and using the right skincare products, but people who suffer from it need to be conscious and take special care always, otherwise it can only get worse”.

POTENTIAL CAUSES OF XEROSIS

One in every three people between 16 and 70 years of age has dry skin, being more prevalent in people over 55. It affects equally men and women.

Besides the genetic or hereditary factors, dry skin can be triggered or worsened by outer stressors. They can damage your hydrolipidic film or acid mantle, which is a very thin layer on the skin surface made of water and lipids.

Dry environments

Fireplaces, heatings, or air conditioners dry the environment and make the skin unable to hold moisture. Humidifiers counteract the dryness that these devices cause and help to improve skin moisture.

Harsh climates

Excessive exposure to sun rays, cold, and/or wind can deplete the natural oils of the acid mantle and harm the skin barrier.

Hot water

Taking too hot showers makes your skin lose oils in the hydrolipidic layer and dry.

Soaps or scrubbing

Abusive use of soaps may also damage the skin barrier and promote dryness. If your skin tends to dry, it is better to use a gentle cleanser or a syndet, as they have neutral or slightly acidic pH.

Loss of hydration

As we all know, drinking water is a must to keep your organs hydrated; it also includes your skin.

Age

Over the years, the production of skin proteins decreases. It leads to a reduction in the amount of Hyaluronic Acid and other water-holding elements in the skin. Furthermore, despite collagen and elastin are not water-holding per se, they play an important role in skin hydration, so the loss of these skin proteins that comes with age also contributes to skin dehydration.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS?

Its signs can vary according to the degree of severity and the physiological characteristics of every patient’s skin, but they generally present these features:

  • Rough skin
  • Itchy skin
  • Scaling skin
  • Flaky skin
  • Dull skin appearance
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Greyish tone
  • Loss of luminosity
  • Fine wrinkles

In severe cases, it can also cause the formation of erythema or skin fissures in certain areas.

On top of it, dry skin also promotes the formation of wrinkles. The loss of water in the cell interfaces and loss of elasticity that xerosis implies leads to a damaged skin extracellular matrix (which gives support to the skin tissues and contains all the essential skin proteins). Therefore, it needs to be controlled or can trigger other skin alterations.

HOW TO IMPROVE XEROSIS

A comprehensive treatment for xerosis should be able to:

Deeply moisturize the skin

By re-establishing the Natural Moisturizing Factor.

Reduce TEWL

Reducing Transepidermal Water Loss is essential to prevent more skin dryness.

Repair the skin barrier

By balancing the skin microbiome, ecosystem of bacteria on the skin surface. It contributes to lipid replenishment and helps to preserve the acid mantle.

Dead cells exfoliation

To improve flaky skin and enhance tone and luminosity.
